Affirmative Action

The Supreme Court agreed to judge a case in which a black Piscataway, New Jersey, teacher was retained in preference to a white teacher with identical qualifications and seniority. The school board, forced by its budget to eliminate one teaching slot, acted to foster diversity in its teaching staff.
