British Telecom said it wants to know why merger partner MCI raised its estimate of local-network losses. Thursday, MCI reported it was doubling, to US$800 million, its projection of 1997 losses related to getting into local phone markets. On Friday, it said its stock fell 18 percent to $35 a share. The upshot is BT may lower its $20.8 billion offer for MCI.
