Against the background of doubt about the basic health of Southeast Asian economies playing a large part in the global economic boom, the International Monetary Fund announced a US$23 billion aid package for Indonesia. In exchange for the aid, Indonesian leader Suharto reportedly signed off on a series of steps to get the government out of its central role in the economy.
