Microsoft, Sun Release the 'Java Papers'

In a textual escalation of its legal battle with Sun Microsystems, Microsoft Web-publishes its Java licensing agreement in an attempt to demonstrate it has not breached the pact. Sun also publishes the document.

Microsoft and Sun Microsystems are letting the public in on the dispute over Microsoft's Java licensing agreement. The contracts went live at 9 a.m. PDT on both the Microsoft and JavaSoft Web sites.

Sun filed suit against Microsoft last week in California, alleging trademark infringement, false advertising, breach of contract, unfair competition, interference with prospective economic advantage, and inducing breach of contract.

The crux of the Sun suit: its claim that Microsoft has attempted to undermine the Java technology by releasing a software development kit and a version of Internet Explorer 4.0 that do not properly support the cross-platform capabilities of the language.
