AOL-CompuServe Deal Moves Forward

CompuServe's 3 million members appear to be headed to America Online after the Justice Department waives a chance to probe deeper into the deal.

The Justice Department has cleared the way for the consummation of the three-way deal among AOL, CompuServe, and WorldCom that will send CompuServe's 3 million-member interactive service division to AOL in exchange for the sale of AOL's network services subsidiary, ANS, to WorldCom.

The antitrust division's decision not to seek additional information ends US inspection of the merger, and leaves only foreign regulatory matters and CompuServe shareholder approval - expected in the first quarter next year - before the deal is closed.
