Since October's troubles, Western investors begin their day with an especially sharp eye on Asia, where today the news was not so good: Tokyo's Nikkei climbed 0.3 percent, but Hong Kong's volatile Hang Seng fell 4.2 percent. London's FTSE 100 reacted with a slow morning, off 0.16 percent, while Frankfurt's DAX fell about 1 percent. On Wall Street, the Dow opened mixed and was down 34 points, at 7631, in late-morning trading; the Nasdaq was off 7, to 1623.
