Fatal Turbulence

Air-safety investigators are checking whether seatbelt signs were on when a United Airlines 747 hit turbulence so severe on Sunday that one passenger was killed and 102 were injured. The aircraft encountered "clear-air turbulence" as it carried vacationers from Tokyo to Honolulu. Some on board said the seatbelt signs were unlit; CNN quoted US aviation officials as saying the signs, which require passengers to return to their seats and strap themselves in, had been activated.
