The World Wide Web Consortium today released the specification for HTML 4.0 as a W3C Recommendation, a status that denotes that the latest version of the markup language is now stable. The news means that browser manufacturers and Web developers will now have a single standard from which to work.
Features specified in the recommendation include in-line frames, advanced forms, advanced tables, and support for objects and scripts. HTML 4.0 also allows Web authors to manage differences in language, text direction, and character encoding.
In a related announcement, the consortium also introduced the W3C HTML Validation Service, a tool that will allow developers to check their code to confirm that it complies with the recommendation.
