Market Update

Europe: Trading was light, but gains were hefty. London's FTSE 100 was up 2 percent, Frankfurt's DAX 40 was ahead 1.8 percent, Paris's CAC 40 up 2.1 percent. Asia: With news of Western lenders' willingness to discuss new terms with South Korea, indexes were buoyant: Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.6 percent, and Tokyo's Nikkei shook off domestic worries to finish nearly unchanged. Americas: New York exchanges took off after news of the European gains, with both the Dow and Nasdaq up 1 percent or better in mid-afternoon
