Generating reams of numbers is easy; understanding them is more difficult. But New Mexico's Sandia National Laboratories is honing a system, EIGEN/VR, to transform complex data into virtual, fully navigable environments. Highlights include data sets involving a brain tumor and a comet hitting Earth. A more practical application? "You can go inside a tire tread and see where it's overheating," explains Sandia's Peter Lamphere.
