Mobile Phone Watch Unveiled

The maker of Swatch watches showed off its wrist phone at a German tech fair. Also: Australian government launches youth suicide prevention site.

The Swiss SMH group, maker of the popular Swatch watches, unveiled a wristwatch at the CeBIT information technology fair in Hanover, Germany, Thursday that doubles as a mobile phone.

With a twist of the colorful dial, Dick Tracy wannabes can ring friends and colleagues, speaking into the watch face.

The new watch, dubbed "Swatch Talk," follows previous products such as Swatch watches with a pager installed.

Family Services Minister Warwick Smith unveiled what could be the world's first Internet site to help young potential suicides, their families, friends, and health workers.

An estimated 400 Australians between 15 and 24 kill themselves each year, giving the country one of the highest suicide rates in the Western world, according to the government. As many as 45,000 young Australians attempt suicide every year.(19.Mar.98)
