RealNetworks Announces Radio Deals

ABC radio stations will begin Internet transmission this month, facilitated by the streaming media pioneer. Also: Lollapalooza cancelled.... A Star Trek game for network play.

RealNetworks has concluded a series of deals with news and entertainment producers that company executives describe as a sign of momentum for more audio and video on the Internet.

Among the deals announced at an industry trade show in Las Vegas was an exclusive arrangement under which all 27 radio stations owned and operated by the ABC network will begin transmitting live on the Internet this month.

RealNetworks officials said the service also would be offered to the nearly 3,000 radio stations affiliated with ABC Radio, the nation's largest radio network and a unit of Walt Disney.

RealNetworks also said it was working with a division of TCI Music to develop and market new music audio and video services.

No one wants to play: Lollapalooza, the touring rock festival with the tech-obsessed sideshows, has been cancelled this year, following a months-long search for a headline act. The original headliner, Jane's Addiction, backed out. Lead singer Perry Ferrell was Lollapalooza's founder. (7.Apr.98)

Make it so: Interplay Productions will release the first Star Trek game designed for real-time network play by year-end, GameSpot reports. Star Trek: Starfleet Command will be playable by up to six players and will feature footage from the TV and movie series in its introduction as well as audio clips during gameplay. (7.Apr.98)
