Rwandan Executions

Ignoring an appeal by the pope and pleas for clemency, Rwandan leaders publicly executed 22 people convicted for crimes committed during the country's 1994 genocide. More than 500,000 people -- most of them Tutsis -- were killed by the Hutu extremist government before Tutsi rebels seized power in July 1994. So far, 330 people have been tried on genocide-related charges; 116 have been sentenced to die; and 125,000 are still awaiting trial.
