Hewlett-Packard 'Copies' Xerox

Earlier this month Xerox sued HP. Now HP is returning the favor, seeking unspecified damages for alleged patent infringement.

On the heels of a Xerox lawsuit filed against Hewlett-Packard earlier this month, HP filed a patent infringement lawsuit today seeking to bar Xerox from selling certain copier products.

The HP suit, filed in US District Court in San Francisco, covers the user interface technology used in certain Xerox touch-control copier screens, an HP spokeswoman said.

HP says the products that allegedly infringe its patents include the Xerox Document Center 220 and 230, and represent more than US$800 million in annual revenue for Xerox.

HP said its lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, covers patents that are altogether different from those cited in the Xerox suit against HP. But it said the two lawsuits were related in the sense that the Xerox suit caused HP to go back and review all of its patents.

Xerox filed a suit for inkjet patent infringement against HP on 14 May. HP said Thursday that it reviewed that complaint and "does not believe the Xerox patent is valid."

Officials at Xerox were not available to comment on the lawsuit.
