3 March 1885: The company is incorporated as American Telephone and Telegraph Co.
1984: With the company having grown to become the national phone monopoly nicknamed Ma Bell, a federal judge's order forces AT&T to spin off the seven Baby Bells that provide local phone service.
1994: The company formally renames itself AT&T Corp.
1996: AT&T spins off equipment and research operations as Lucent Technologies Inc. and computermaker and cash register manufacturer NCR Corp.
