Tuesday night's World Cup-eve street pageant went a bit awry, with fans and cops doing battle on the Champs-Elysées. News reports suggested that it was a combination of too much alcohol in the partygoers and overzealous peacekeeping by the gendarmes that led to bottle throwing and baton swinging. Thirty-four officers were hurt, one critically. No word on the civilian toll.
