Hero Mourning

"It's a hell of a way to lose a great American hero," said one retired Marine brass. "I guess it's a statement of our times." The ugly emblem he spoke of was the death of retired Gen. Marion Carl, a World War II ace and postwar test pilot who was called "the Chuck Yeager of the Marine Corps." Carl, 83, was shot in the head and killed Sunday by a man who kicked in the front door of his Roseburg, Oregon, home. His wife, Edna, suffered a glancing shotgun blast to the head. The killer was at large Monday, with a couple hundred dollars and the Carls' car.
