Investors did a little portfolio-padding to make the end-of-quarter books look good, driving the market up as Asian jitters settled down. The Dow rocketed more than 100 to break the 9000 mark for the first time in about a month but settled for a gain of 52.82 to close at 8997.37, a 0.59 percent increase. The Nasdaq gained 16.87 to close at 1886.40, 0.40 percent higher.
