Klan Loses Big

Members of the Ku Klux Klan in North and South Carolina must pay US$37.8 million for creating a climate of hate that led to the torching of a predominately black church, a jury of nine blacks and three whites decided Friday. The $300,000 in actual damages and $37.5 million in punitive damages is higher than the $200,000 and $25 million sought by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has won other court judgments that have bankrupted Klan factions.
