Stuck at $5.15

A move to raise the US minimum wage by a buck, to $6.15, by January 2000 failed in the Senate Tuesday. The vote was 55-44, with all but two Republicans opposing the bill and all but two Democrats backing it. Massachusetts Democrat Ted Kennedy sponsored the legislation and spoke passionately on its behalf, leading Utah Republican Orrin Hatch to retort: "I always enjoy listening to wealthy members of Congress talk about how the minimum wage is going to benefit society."
