New ICANN Do Crew

The international organization that will oversee technical management of the Internet appoints its membership advisory committee.

The organization that will oversee the Internet's technical management on Thursday announced the appointment of 13 people to its membership advisory committee.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, said the committee members were selected from 80 applications the board has received since 25 November.

The new members are:

  • Izumi Aizu of the Asia & Pacific Internet Association
  • Diane Cabell of Fausett, Gaeta & Lund, LLP in the United States
  • George Conrades, ICANN's chairman
  • ICANN member Greg Crew
  • Paval Duggal, Cyberlaw Consultant in India
  • Kanchana Kanchanasut of Thailand's Asian Institute of Technology
  • Daniel Kaplan, consultant to the Internet Society in France
  • Siegfried Langenbach of Germany's CSL GmbH
  • Nii Quaynor of Network Computer Systems in Ghana
  • Oscar Robles Garay of Mexico's Latin American & Caribbean Networks Forum/ENRED
  • Dan Steinberg of Canada's Open Root Server Confederation;
  • Tadeo Takahashi of Internet Society Brazil
  • Jonathan Zittrain, who will serve as a liaison to the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School.

The committee will advise the ICANN board on its membership structure and will issue a report at the next ICANN meeting in Singapore from 2 to 4 March.

ICANN has been a source of controversy since its inception. The entity will take over the Net management from the US government. The organization's activity was halted in late November by White House technology adviser Ira Magaziner, who said the organization had to be more open and accountable.

ICANN revised its bylaws and gained Magaziner’s green light to proceed, working with the Commerce Department on the details. The transition of Net mananagement from the government to ICANN could go on for two years.
