Flash Dips a Toe in Java, MP3

Macromedia upgrades the music in its animation software. Developers can now stream MP3 files in Flash, but the new player won't compete with Winamp. By Oscar S. Cisneros.

Sun Microsystems is bolstering the multimedia capabilities of Java by integrating Macromedia's Flash animation player.

On Thursday, Sun said it is licensing Flash technology and will incorporate it into the Java Media Framework. This will allow Java developers to integrate Flash playback into their Java applets and applications, said Bill Schulze, senior manager of strategic relations at Macromedia.
