Subject: The Myth of the Pocket Protector
This is in reference to ("The Myth of the PocketProtector," 20.Sep.99). I would like to commend you on the article you wrote concerning the image of techies. It was very nice seeing that because I am a black student whose major is computer science at a polytechnic university in Brooklyn, [where only] 11 percent of the students are black ... because "its not cool". Unfortunately, those people don't really know what technology has to offer them.
I think if Hollywood [and] television ads depicted computers techinicians and engineers in a more positive way then maybe there would be more computer scientists out there. Anyway, I think that it is possible to market computer technology in a way that would attract younger adults, and even teens.
