Crowned

The heyday of the Habsburg's passed a few centuries back, but every now and then one of Austria's hereditary royals turns up in the news columns. This time it's Karl, grandson of Austria's last emporer, Franz Josef. On Friday, an appeals court in provincial Feldkirch ordered the descendant of Charles I to cough up US$14,000 after upholding his 1996 jewel-smuggling conviction. The nobleman and his wife were nabbed carrying a bejeweled tiara, which they failed to declare as they crossed the frontier into Italy.
