Subject: Argument of the Century: Yay!
A great article, which I'm in complete agreement with ("The Argument of the Century," 29.Nov.99). It gets to the heart of the matter: People who insist the millennium starts in 2001 are just missing the point, which is that the changeover to the year 2000 will be one of the coolest days in our lifetime. The end of the 1900s, the end of the entire 1000s! 2001? Who cares? Other than being a book/movie title, that's just 1 year after 2000.
The traditional designation of the start of a century or millennium is so stupid anyway, it's not a tradition worth observing. Why should the 19th century be a different time period than the 1800s, a hundred year time period differing by just 1 year? People refer to them almost synonymously anyway. Let's just start counting sensibly.
