Subject: An Apple You Can Lick

I am not an avid or fanatical Mac loyalist, although I often regret my move from the Mac to the IBM-compatible PC. But the comments about form over function by Mr. Oakes ("An Apple You Can 'Lick'," 7.Jan.2000) reminds me of the fanatical comments by PC owners and Microsoft execs prior to Windows who referred to the Mac as a toy because of the GUI interface. After all, real men use command-line interfaces, not the GUI interface.

Apple has always been at the forefront of innovation. Sometimes wrong, but always looking for new ways to make computers work for customers rather than asking customers to adapt to computers. Microsoft is certainly no slouch, but they almost missed the Internet connection because they are not particularly innovative. Fortunately MS had the money and manpower to make a sea change and rapidly. Why shouldn't we have computers that look sleek as well as working sleekly?
