The hockey hall of famer, who captained the great Detroit Red Wings teams of the '40s and early '50s, played 15 seasons, scoring 189 goals and adding 283 assists. He was a linemate of the legendary Gordie Howe and is credited with doing more to help Howe's development than any other player. After winning Stanley Cups with the Wings in 1943, 1950, and 1952, Abel went on to become a coach, general manager, and broadcaster with Detroit.
