Auction Sites Get Warning Links

It may be easy for recalled products to vanish from store shelves, but that doesn't hold for what may be offered for bidding on the Web. The top U.S. consumer safety commission hopes it has a solution.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) said Friday it reached agreement with Internet auction sites eBay and Amazon.com to make it easier for customers to identify dangerous products sold online.

The commission said links to a special page warning of the dangers of recalled products would be placed immediately on portions of the eBay site.

The information would be available as a link from both the bidder and seller forms for certain products in addition to the "Tips for Buyers," "Tips for Sellers," and "Is my item allowed on eBay?" sections of the www.ebay.com site.

Amazon.com Auctions, which already includes some links to the CPSC's website, will soon include a link in the confirmation emails sent to bidders and sellers of tools, toys, exercise equipment, and other products at its www.amazon.com site, the commission said in a statement.

"CSPC can get these products off of store shelves, but it is more difficult to get them out of people's homes," said CPSC chairman Ann Brown.

"Many of these items can end up for sale by individuals online on the increasingly popular auction websites," Brown said.
