Subject: Palm VII Lemon?

This story, and others, really show the misguided attempts of the government and corporate America to try and stop hacking. ("MostHateD to Plead Most Guilty," Mar. 29, 2000.) It should be public policy to have a federal registry for successful hacks and if a cracker gets into a site and reports it, he should be exempt from prosecution. Then the federal government should give the site a time limit to secure the site or face stiff fines.

The crime here is that corporations think prosecuting is a substitute for security! As we enter this millennium, more wired than ever, we are exposing ourselves to extreme risk of foreign espionage and other security risks, yet we punish our most able security consultants and ban them from computers for years! The damages cited in these stories are, in most cases, corporate America
