Subject: Get off DoubleClick's back

Before retiring two years ago, I spent my life in television news management. I'm very thankful that I got out when I did, for the news business iscertainly not what it used to be. Generally, I'm a very big fan of Wired News, but the article today about DoubleClick really pisses me off ( DoubleClick Smokescreen?, May 23, 2000).

When will you people realize that targeted marketing has been around a whole lot longer than DoubleClick? To criticize their methods, or even theirpotential methods, is doing nothing but putting money in the self-serving hands of what you term "privacy advocates." Wake up. Rather than buyingeverything they feed you, why not take a look at their boards and, while you're at it, ask for their fundraising records since this whole businessbroke. And see who's using the issue to raise political money too. You are being used!

And what's the big deal, really? The point is that targeted marketing is the way the world works. So it's tied to your computer now. What's the big deal?

All this huffing and puffing about DoubleClick is really only one thing. What would happen if your wife found out you frequent those naughty porn sites?
