Subject: Do We Really Need New Domains?
Thanks for providing this bit of intelligent commentary in your story ("Do We Really Need New Domains?," 2:00 a.m. Nov. 17, 2000 PST).
I'm so sick of all the hype about new domain names, and I agreewith your implication that maybe, just maybe, the risk of confusionis greater than the perceived benefits we'd get from new TLDs.
I played around with whois.net a few weeks ago, andunsurprisingly found a great many interesting, memorable anduseful domains still available.
Just because there are no longer many (if any) three-letter domains or common- (single) word domains left, doesn't mean the sky is falling ... or that people can't string two simple words together and get some cool names.
I always love reading Wired stuff, and this article was noexception. Keep up the fine work.
