Dog Days

Buddy the dog flew off to a new life in New York with former President Bill Clinton on Saturday, but Socks the cat stayed behind. Socks, 9, was off to live with Betty Currie, Clinton's White House secretary. "She loves the cat. She wants the cat,'' a Clinton aide said. Chocolate lab Buddy accompanied Clinton, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and daughter Chelsea to New York, where he will take up residence at the family's home in Chappaqua. Socks came to the White House from Arkansas in 1993 as the pet of Chelsea, who is now a student at Stanford University. But the arrival of Buddy in late 1997 sparked a low-level cat-versus-dog war that the president said he was unable to resolve despite two years of trying.
