Subject: Napster: The Trades Continue

Gee, I guess people will have to pay for copyrighted music (" Napster: The Trades Continue ," March 9, 2001). I don't know what appalls me more, that so may people seem to think they have a God-given right to free music, or that Napster thinks that it's perfectly fine to make money off of other people's creations.

Two frequent excuses heard from Napster users are: "CDs cost too much" and "there's no evidence that Napster hurt CD sales." If you think music costs too much, don't buy it. Start your own recording industry and charge whatever prices you think are fair. As for "there's no evidence that Napster hurt CD sales," whether music industry sales have been hurt or not is irrelevant. If I break into your house and steal some insignificant item, have you been materially hurt? No. But it's still wrong.
