It was an impossible task, guaranteed to please no one, but that didn't stop the Recording Industry Association of America from doing it anyway. Making no allowances for different types of music, the RIAA took every song of the 20th century that it could think of, threw them into a hopper and -- voila! -- out came a list of the top 365 songs of the century. The top five, working backwards: "American Pie" (Don McLean), "Respect" (Aretha Franklin), "This Land Is Your Land" (Woodie Guthrie), "White Christmas" (Bing Crosby) and ... "Over the Rainbow" (Judy Garland). Discuss.
