Passage: Babu Chhiri

Babu Chhiri, a Sherpa guide who made the quickest trip up Mount Everest and also stayed at the top the longest without using bottled oxygen, died from a fall into a crevasse of the world's highest peak. The 35-year-old was guiding a team of mountaineers Sunday when he slipped and fell 100 feet into a crevasse at Camp Two, situated at 20,400 feet. Last year, Chhiri scampered up the 29,035-foot summit from the 17,160-foot base camp in just 16 hours and 56 minutes. He shattered the previous record of 20 hours and 24 minutes set in 1998. Most climbers take two to four days to cover the distance from the base camp to the summit.
