Subject: FCC Feels Pay Phones' Pain

In reference to your story (FCC Feels Pay Phones' Pain, 7:00 a.m. Apr. 6, 2001 PDT) I'd imagine more people catch illness and are easy targets for crimes when they use a public pay phone.

Pay phones use to be the only game in town and were quite useful whenLed Zeppelin was flying around in The Starship – a Boeing 720B
forty-seater – and Nixon got the news off the teletype. Perhaps they could be kept as national monuments if people didn't keep running them over, burning them down and ripping them off with crowbars.

If we just had emergency phones around that were funded by all participants of the telecommunication industry, there might be a benefit. Florescent yellow and orange boxes complete with cameras to protect users that direct dial 911.
