Passage: Stanley Mosk, 88

Mosk, the only purely liberal justice left on the California Supreme Court, died suddenly at his home Tuesday. Mosk, who worked Monday, wrote a number of landmark decisions concerning civil rights, free speech and criminal justice during a 37-year tenure that made him the state's longest-serving justice. Several rulings -- for example, overturning a whites-only home-deed restriction, compelling private developers to file environmental impact reports, and banning racial discrimination in jury selection -- preceded similar rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court.
