Paraglider Snares Lady Liberty

French paraglider Terry Do fails a landing on the Statue of Liberty ... his second such snag in two years.

NEW YORK -- A French stuntman snared the sail of his paraglider on the torch of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor on Thursday, and was left dangling on the statue's massive arm before being hauled to safety by rescuers.

A Reuters photographer and TV cameraman on the scene said Frenchman Terry Do was circling the 151-foot statue in his paraglider in an attempt to land on the torch, when he appeared to miss his landing spot under the golden flame.

Do, who tried and failed the same stunt last year, clung to ropes from his paraglider for about 40 minutes before he was rescued and then arrested.

No one was injured in the incident, and it was unclear whether any damage had been done to the statue, which was presented to the people of the United States by France July 4, 1884, and erected on Liberty Island two years later.
