Passage: Bert Grant, 73

Grant was widely credited with establishing the first American brewpub since Prohibition when he opened his Yakima Brewing and Malting Co. in 1982. The pub in downtown Yakima, Washington was inspired by Grant's utter disdain for the bland, uniform taste of beers produced by the large, corporate brewers. Knowing that he might be stuck drinking a Bud or a Miller, Grant always carried a vial of hop oil in his pocket to add a little zest to the brew.
