British Gardener George Evans of Chard, Somerset, has used the same wooden mallet for the last 55 years. Mr. Evans, 67, bought the tool for a few pennies from Woolworths to use in his school woodworking class. When it broke recently, he wrote to congratulate Woolies bosses: "I bought a woodworking mallet from your branch at Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, in 1946. It has just today broken at the handle. Over the years it had lots of use and abuse. I am very well satisfied. Thank you." Woolworths no longer sells mallets, but has sent George £50 (US$73) in vouchers to buy new tools. A spokeswoman said: "Touch wood, they'll last another half century."
