Subject: ID Cards Are de Rigueur Worldwide
I think many people are overlooking the single most glaring fact regarding this issue. We already have a national identification system in place, using government issued drivers licenses or I.D cards and social security cards. ("ID Cards Are de Rigueur Worldwide," September 25, 2001). Even if we managed to get the whole country to agree on a nationally accepted standard, you can be sure that the likelihood of extending use of those cards versus immigration cards, to immigrants, would be low. Therefore in the long run, what would be the point of a national ID card to start with. The whole purpose would be avoided besides which, with today's modern technology, those with a reason to try and falsely enter or live in the U.S would simply find a way to forge fake copies anyhow.
It's already illegal in most, if not all of the U.S, to be without legal identification. The bigger problem is getting law enforcement to pay more attention to the types of identification they encounter.
