Subject: Wiretap Bill Gets Third Degree
Your article "Wiretap Bill Gets Third Degree," September 26, 2001, states that in his response, Ashcroft said he believed "To:" and "From:" lines of e-mail could be intercepted without a court order, but "Subject:" lines would require a judge's signature. "We're not asking that we get content or the subject," he replied. "We want information on who sent it and to whom it was sent."
Anyone who has seen any spam (i.e. anyone) knows that the "To:" and "From:" lines are useless for Ashcroft's purpose. It is very disappointing to me that our Attorney General is so clueless. Can he please suggest that the "header" of e-mail be captured? I think that a court order is in line for this, though, whether the "Subject:" is included or not. I think that the courts are ready to be expedient in this climate.
