Subject: Windows XP: EXtra Proprietary
I'm writing in response to the article " Windows XP: EXtra Proprietary" (October 31, 2001). When did it become evil to create, market and sell a product, and be incredibly good at it? Sure, Microsoft may add features to their OS that I don't particularly like, but so do other software manufacturers.
Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it. I'd yell a bit louder if they made it a requirement, but they haven't done that.
I'm a 19-year-old MIS director with four years of on-the-job experience. MS Windows is just a hell of a lot better at certain functions (particularly desktops) than any other offering out there.
When the Linux community makes the training of non-technical computer users a bit simpler, I'll gladly make the change. Until that point in time, however, I'll stick to using Linux for its wonderful abilities to function as a server.
The companies make the products for Windows because, number one, the majority of the population has either willingly chosen to use Windows, or they have willingly learned the ins and outs of it rather than other available OSs, and number two, MS has made it a hell of a lot easier to write software and drivers.
With WinXP, MS has finally come out with an OS that is not only more functional than previous versions, but it is more attractive and easier to use. What else can you ask for? Isn't that the same goal that the Linux community is aiming for? Last time I checked, it was.
So instead of griping that MS is being unfair, get your asses off your preacher's podiums and make a better OS.
