Bedlam Reigns at Browns Game

Cleveland fans rain bottles down on referees after a reversed ruling takes away their team's chances for a comeback victory.

CLEVELAND -- Bottles thrown by Cleveland Browns fans hit players on both teams and other people in the stands but didn´t cause any serious injuries.

Some fans were arrested but the exact number won´t be released until Monday, Cleveland police Lt. Sharon MacKay said. One person was treated at a hospital for a minor injury and released.

A number of fans were treated for minor injuries at a clinic the Browns run at the stadium on game day, but further details were not immediately available, team spokesman Todd Stewart said.

Most of the hundreds of bottles thrown Sunday were plastic, but many were filled with beer, making them dangerous weapons. A few fans tried to run on the field but were quickly caught by security personnel.

The fans were angry about an overturned call in the last minute of the game that helped the Jacksonville Jaguars win 15-10.

The Browns referred questions about arrests to city police. A message seeking comment from Lewis Merletti, a former Secret Service director who now heads team security, was not immediately returned.

The bottle-throwing forced players, referees and on-field police officers and security guards to run for cover under the stadium.

"Plastic or not, we won´t see beer bottles at Cleveland Browns Stadium again," said Doug Dieken, a Browns lineman from 1971-84 and now a member of the team´s broadcast team.

Extra police cars were sent to the lakefront stadium, but the problem didn´t spread.

"They didn´t have a right to throw anything on the field," fan Marcus Johnson said. "No matter what the outcome is, violence is not the answer."
