A fire of undetermined origin has damaged the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, the largest gothic cathedral in the world which has been more than a century in the building and remains unfinished. The fire, which burned for nearly two-and-a-half hours before being brought under control, broke out around 7 a.m. local time Tuesday. Part of the roof caved in, firefighters said, and the damage appeared to be most extensive in the rear of the massive building. Although the cornerstone was laid in 1892, the cathedral has never been finished. Construction resumed in 1982, following a 41-year break.
