Subject: Survey: Opt-Out Is a Cop-Out
I'm writing in response to the article, Survey: Opt-Out Is a Cop-Out, May 7, 2002. Here's an idea. How about a law that prohibits a company from giving out or selling consumer information to third parties unless the consumer authorizes a company to do so?
The way the law is now it would be nearly impossible for a consumer to notify every company or organization in possession of his/her personal information not to release such information to a third party. Granted, such a law would have little chance of passing since it would be subject to intense lobbying efforts (read that campaign contributions).
