Subject: Competitors: MS Up to Old Tricks
I am writing in response to the article "Competitors: MS Up to Old Tricks," October 16, 2002.
The GPL does not bar any payment; firms can charge a distribution fee for software.
However, under the GPL, the source code must also be freely available. The Free Software Foundation used to charge money to distribute some of its tools; however, they sent the source code with it.
As Richard Stallman says, "free as in speech, not as in beer."
