His 60 Minutes Are Up

Don Hewitt, who conceived the original 60 Minutes TV news magazine and has been its executive producer since the stopwatch began ticking in 1968, is stepping down next year. 60 Minutes, still a Sunday night fixture on CBS, is the longest-running prime-time show ever and remains the most popular show of its kind. The 80-year-old Hewitt, who plans to remain with CBS in an advisory capacity, will be succeeded by Jeff Fager, currently executive producer of 60 Minutes II.
