Israel's new government will be stacked with hardliners opposed to Palestinian statehood, making Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's pledge to accept "painful concessions" in exchange for peace ring a little hollow. Sharon retained Shaul Mofaz, the hawkish defense minister who wants to expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and appointed Silvan Shalom, a relatively inexperienced Likud Party protege, as foreign minister. Sharon's coalition government, announced Wednesday, gives the prime minister a comfortable 68-seat majority in the Knesset.
