There seem to be two points which just don't occur to the labels, and I'm surprised they haven't been covered before (Streaming Music to Monied Masses, March 27, 2003):

  1. Free file sharing has helped millions of people get their hands on obscure tracks from the '30s/'40s/'50s/'60s/'70s/'80s/'90s that they would not be able to get at the local record store. If I wanted to get the latest Hindi song, I might as well give up the search right now. What would have otherwise cost the labels billions of dollars worth of archives are instead maintained for free on some anonymous PC which is self-supported. This can only be a benefit.

  2. Will somebody please tell me why I have to buy a 12-track CD just to listen to one song? Sure, this helps push the sales of multiple CD changers but it does not make for a good consumer experience. I want one song. If the music labels understood that, then there would be less file sharing going on.

How these points can be beyond them, I don't know.
